Festival of Lights 2018

DSC_0726©You know I love fireworks, and my favorites of the year here in Mazatlán tend to be the Festival de la Luz, because TEN THOUSAND fireworks are launched 300 meters into the air from FIFTEEN locations over FOUR KILOMETERS along the malecón, lighting up the city’s boardwalk. These fireworks normally take place during Maratón del Pacífico, but they were delayed this year. This tenth annual event included 2-1/2 TONS of 20 different kinds of fireworks at a cost of 1,300,000 pesos, and lasted a full thirty minutes. Click on any photo to enlarge it or view a slideshow.

This year was a challenge photographically. High tide during launch meant the beach was off limits. Brisk wind meant that shooting from the south was out of the question—that is where the smoke headed. So, I set up north of the viewing area, which was less than ideal for a good view.

I was blessed to be joined by a good friend and three visiting Colombian artists, so we enjoyed a good time. I set up both my cameras, though my intervalometer decided not to work, so having two cameras made for a busy viewing. I won’t be repeating that anytime soon.

I trust you were able to enjoy the show. Many, many thanks to José Ramón Manguart Sánchez, Tres Islas Hotel Association, Secretaria de Turismo Sinaloa, and the municipal authorities!

Festival de la Luz 2015

DSC_0069 - Version 2©El Maratón del Pacífico was in danger of Hurricane Sandra this year, but she, fortunately, never materialized. But boy oh boy, the fireworks came through better than ever!

I had a really good time with Greg earlier this week scouting locations to photograph the fireworks. Usually, I take the pics from our house, where we have a party with some friends. But from our house, you look left to see six stations of fireworks, and you look right to see five more. I wanted to go somewhere where I could see ALL the stations all in one sighting, rather than being in the middle of them all (which also has its advantages). Click on any photo to see it larger or view a slideshow.

So, we scouted locations, and I found a place where I could get unobstructed views of the fireworks and a good reflection of them in the ocean. Fortunately we also avoided the smoke that can get in the way of crisp photos. Then I did some research so that I could take the best photos possible. I set my camera ahead of time, so when I got there it would be easy to get going.

What do you think? I feel pretty good; they are way better than last year. I missed the closeups, but I have so wanted to do some of these shots.

Many, many thanks to Greg for his patience with my photography, and for him and our friends joining us for cena and drinks! The start of the full and half marathon will come early tomorrow, so I will post this so we can get some shuteye. Thanks for the terrific fireworks display, Mazatlán!

Festival de la Luz 2014

DSC_0120 - Version 2©Last night’s Gran Maratón del Pacífico fireworks, called the Festival de la Luz, were spectacular! As usual we watched them from our pool deck with a few friends who happened by.

I love being in the middle of the 15 launch locations here, but I’m always pulled and torn which way to look: left, right or forward. There is no way to capture the magnitude of the event all in one glance or photo from the middle of things. On the other hand, being in the center of things does rock… One year I do want to go to one end or the other to watch them, as the perspective would be so different. It’s just so comfy sitting at home with a glass of vino!

I got out the tripod and did my best to capture some of the glory of the evening’s main event. It’s fun to finally be learning and practicing how to use all the manual settings on my camera. I’ll eventually get there. Thank you for your encouragement during my learning journey! Click on any photo to enlarge or view a slideshow.

This year this terrific annual event included four flyboard performances. The flyboarders performed at different locations around the bay. One was very close to us; it started with one performer and ended with two. I spliced footage from the fireworks and the flyboard together in the movie below. Enjoy!

Gran Maratón del Pacífico 2013

We LOVE marathon. And the triathlon. And all the numerous other huge and wonderful sporting events Mazatlán hosts. We live right in the middle of it all. Most the events start and end in the City Park, right behind our house, and take place along the malecón, right in front of our house. They bring huge numbers of people to town, athletes plus their families from all over the country and internationally. Mouseover any photo to see a caption; click on it to view it larger or see a slideshow.

Today’s marathon, however, was different. Greg decided he’d run the 10k, and our niece, Arely, has been working since January to be able to run the 5k. And they did it! My most hearty congratulations to both of them! They will be in partying mood this evening for the fireworks display on the bay (10+ launching locations, starts at 8 pm).

I am always so impressed by the competitors in wheelchairs as well as those on crutches! This year, I also noticed lots of children running with their parents or aunts and uncles. I’m guessing in previous years I’ve watched the marathon runners come in, so this year with the 5 and 10k, I naturally saw more children. Some people love to dress up. This year there was a guy who’d made an Eagle costume out of trash. He ran with the whole get-up on, dragging trash behind him, with signs on his wings, in order to raise awareness of ecological responsibility. Bravo!

Despite the crowds during these huge international events, Mazatlán remains a small city, and it’s fun to hug and get hugged by friends who are also competing.

Congratulations, Greg and Arely! Congratulations to everyone who competed this morning! What a great group of healthy people! Tonight will be fantastic, and the half- and full marathons tomorrow even better! ¡Viva Mazatlán, home of the athletes and their fans!

Below I post a very short video compilation of the morning.
